Empowering Educators in Galway: AI Literacy in the Classroom Workshop

The AI Literacy in the Classroom initiative, developed by ADAPT and Dublin City University (DCU) with support from Google, is continuing its mission to empower post-primary educators with the knowledge and tools to guide their students in the safe and ethical use of AI technologies.

Following the success of the first workshop, held in Dublin in November 2024, the second in-person workshop is scheduled to take place at the Galway Education Centre on January 25th, 2025. This event promises to deliver another engaging and insightful session for educators interested in exploring the transformative role of AI in education.

The Galway workshop will focus on exploring the key AI concepts in order to strengthen educator’s understanding of the fundamentals of AI and its applications in the classroom, as well as exploring the ethical considerations, such as social and ethical implications of AI use in schools. Finally, the workshop brings practical integration which will help the educators consider strategies for integrating AI into teaching practices and policy-making.

Led by experts from ADAPT and DCU, Dr. Eileen Culloty, Dr. Michal Wieczorek, and Dr. Eamon Costello, participants will gain a clearer understanding of AI’s role in education, strategies to empower students to use AI tools responsibly and thoughtfully and practical insights and resources for creating AI policies tailored to their schools.

The AI Literacy in the Classroom initiative provides educators with both in-person workshops and a 90-minute free online course. The online course complements the workshops by offering two modules, AI Literacy and AI Ethics, designed to provide flexible learning opportunities for teachers. With engaging activities, expert insights, and practical tools, the course ensures educators are equipped to navigate AI’s evolving role in education while fostering responsible and ethical AI use among students. The online course is available now and can be accessed at adaptcentre.ie/ai-literacy-in-the-classroom.

In addition to the Galway workshop, upcoming sessions are planned for Cork (March 1st, 2025) and Sligo (March 22rd, 2025).
